I made the mistake of buying an Impreza, stay far far away!! Oil issues till the cows come home. At least in my 2012 but I’ve heard on more recent models too.
Spend your hard earned money on something more reliable. No fun to get a quote from Subaru dealer for 4K to take apart engine and put in new gaskets.

Another way to go about it is to look at no haggle dealers and get an OTD offer from them. It won’t be your best price but it will give you a data point.
I believe Fitzmall and Autonation are no haggle. Not sure if they’re Subaru. Go to their websites and configure car you want to get their prices.
Fitzmall is no haggle and has Subaru.

Another way to go about it is to look at no haggle dealers and get an OTD offer from them. It won’t be your best price but it will give you a data point.

I would buy a used Subaru with under 20K miles.
If you want price, look up the vehicle make/model/year on Kelly Blue Book. If you buy new, you're going to take an automatic 20% depreciation hit just driving out the door.

HRV is made in Mexico and has had quality issues.
Are the Corolla made in US?

We bought a used CRV as a second car. Teens were going to learn to drive on it, and it felt like a reasonable balance of economy and safety.

So we unexpectedly need a new car and are kind of scrambling on what to buy.
This is kind of a secondary car for commuting, so my first impulse would be to get something like a Honda Civic or Kia forte. Does anyone have any recommendations for which small but car is reliable and safe? It seems like Honda is actually not ranked as highly anymore so I feel very uninformed.
The used car market still seems inflated compared to pre-pandemic, so the value for a reliable used car seems to be somewhat lower than just buying new and having those productive years? I know that was the case for several years during the pandemic. Is it still better to buy new, we can afford it. We’re just trying to save up money for college in a couple years.
And then there is the electric option. Is there an affordable electric now? I think even the cheapest store around 50k and I don’t think any rebates from the government really move the needle anymore, right? Maybe I am just not following along?
I tried searching on Edmunds, but it only seems to give me actual cars for sale rather than expected pricing for a range of cars, maybe I need to use a computer.
