Grinnell College has dropped eight places in the U.S. News & World Report’s ranking of Best National Liberal Arts Colleges in 2025. The report ranked the College nineteenth, whereas last year’s report ranked Grinnell eleventh in the category.

Now.. they along with Oberlin will crib that ranking doesn't matter

Next year they'll tweak their rankings system slightly again and college X will move down many places while college Y moves up many spots. And there will be a post here and some will agree and others disagree as we continue to play our parts in the cycle.

I haven’t thought about it this way, but you are right.

This, and I have no connection to Grinell. Schools don’t change radically from year to year, and the rankings emphasis on low income stidents isn’t useful to most families.

I dont care about Grinnell or LACs in general, but Grinnell should not worry. US News rankings have jumped the shark. The formula tweaking over the past few years was just too much, too blatant, too arrogantly trying to make the tail wag the dog.

The good news is that it is still among the top three schools in the state of Iowa.

It does seem odd that there could be such huge shifts, both up and down, over the course of just one year. The reality is none of the colleges change substantially so quickly to justify large swings in the rankings. This seems more about adjustments to the methodology. What factors specifically made Grinnell drop 8 places since last year?
