Was coming here to also say it's in the tomatoes, but specifically tomato paste rather than the sauce.

Second the Campbells. Look for recipe's with the canned tomato soup. You can make it quick and easy.

Add some honey (the chicken makhani recipe I use has a little squeeze)

Use a can of Campbell's tomato soup instead of tomatos. It makes it sweeter and is the original recipe.

Pioneer Woman had a recipe with sugar added. I liked it.

Look up “butter chicken” and have some fun combining the two recipes.

My son likes “sweet” chicken tikka masala, such as the kind at Himalayan Heritage bar. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to copy the sweetness? Add brown sugar to regular chicken tikka masala?
