Add to it some whistling and singing and the same quotes from the same poetry and that’s my dad.

I agree. The OP's attitude makes me afraid to get old.

As long as you have no illusions about being “independent” (if you are 80, you are most likely not) and as long as you don’t expect your kids to entertain you - you should be fine.

It can be from dentures, dental issues like missing teeth causing an incorrect bite, and the general slacking of muscle and tissue that leads to things like snoring and apnea. And hearing loss makes them not notice.

I wish Jeff would split the forum. There needs to be an Elderhate and Eldercare forum. The spiteful, selfish, cruel remarks in here get so disrespectful. It’s also hard to have helpful conversations with the atmosphere of contempt for elders.

My 73 year old aunt clears her throat constantly. Sometimes she starts talking and then you have to listen to her clear her throat for a solid 60 seconds before she can continue. It's so gross. She never smoked, either, which is really odd.

OMG - My mother does the smacking of the lips for what seems like hours after eating - drives me batty!

If you have enough congestion to clear your throat a lot, you probably have enough that you breathe through your mouth more.

Yes, older people have more problems and make more sounds.

All of this.

It's worse if the perpetrator has historically been all over other people's etiquette violations.

I can't take it anymore. Is this normal? Do people just not care about the annoying noises they make when they get older?
