Curious if folks have any licensed grief / family therapists who have been practicing for a while for individual sessions with teen age kids and surviving spouse they recommend based on their personal experience?

Also, any feedback on any therapists at practices below would be helpful too

- Jonah Green and Associates
- Cacti Counseling
- Classen-Miller and Associates
- Willow Oak Therapy Center

Not looking for Wendt Center, Caring Matters, Griefshare.org, Dougy etc. group support therapy centers at this time.

Thanks!

Montgomery Hospice does grief support groups, as does Holy Cross Hospice. Caring Matters in Gaithersburg also runs grief support groups. These are all free or low cost. I know there is an excellent grief counselor at Caring Matters who does spousal loss support. She was my therapist years ago and she helped me tremendously.

Jonah Green doesn’t accept insurance and is not forthcoming at all about that. I wasted time doing a phone consult with them only to be told at the end they billed like 200 a session, when I had indicated I needed a group that took insurance when I emailed Jonah at the beginning. Their website didn’t even say this like most reputable places have posted under the FAQ. For that reason alone I would avoid them. Practices need to operate transparently and honestly.

Majority of Jonah Green's clinicians are LMs- meaning not fully licensed yet and going through the supervision process. We tried 2 therapists there that were nice but sessions lacked structure and felt like just a lot of talking and no goals being set. I requested a treatment plan with goals and it was poorly written and never executed. One of the therapists we used is no longer there. We have an outstanding therapist that works with our family now and it's night and day. Jonah green was expensive and no where near as good clinicians as other practices. I do not want this post to turn into a bash a therapy practice post and hope people comment on the others you listed above so you can get the therapy you all need. FWIW my husband used Wendt center and his therapist was AMAZING. Worth getting on their waitlist.

My child had a good experience with Jonah Green and Associates, FWIW. We were not there for grief, but rather for trauma/abandonment issues and found the intake process easy, the therapists appropriately diverse in background and training to pick one that worked, and the process of scheduling and paying all seemed fine.

The therapist we used is no longer there, and I'm not doubting PP but just saying we had a fine experience.

Can you provide more details please? Maybe there is a way to do this that would help people understand, without revealing details about anyone in particular. It's a large practice, is it possible that your issues are with one particular therapist only, or is there something about the practice in general that you are opposed to? If this is just about one particular therapist, then it doesn't make sense to malign the entire practice.

Spouse found excellent grief support through Hospice when his mom died
