I totally agree but my comment is not about sexual violence and murder. I don't think it's a given that she was harmed by someone else is it? It's a pretty dangerous hike and hiking alone is not recommended under most circumstances. There is crime there and it's a huge shock to the system to American women, especially if they aren't from a big city. But I would still go back in a heartbeat.

Table Mountain is beautiful. Cape Town’s setting is stunning…but the crime is off the charts. For example, cabs do not stop at red lights at night, so that they can avoid armed robbery.

This is so tragic. I lived in Cape Town for a year and I would have never done this hike alone.
