If you have a slow cooker, throw in dried black beans (remember there are black turtle beans and black soy beans) and cover with an inch of water, add a postage stamp size bit of kombu to reduce gas. Cook overnight. Drain and put 1.5 cups (equivalent of a 15 oz can) into freezer bags or containers and freeze, pull out when needed.

Add a seasoning packet of Goya Sazon to your black beans.

Plus tomato sauce, fresh garlic, a little onion.

This is a pro tip - the Goya beans are the best in cans, and the soup is already seasoned. Very salty but the rice soaks up the liquid, it’s delicious.

I love A Dozen Cousins beans-in-a-pouch. Agree that their seasoned black beans are terrific. I usually put them in enchiladas or tacos. The pinto beans are baller, too.

The quality of the beans itself makes a huge difference. I buy from Rancho Gordo, boil in batches, and freeze them.

Start with dried beans that you soak overnight with a bit of baking soda. Cook in an Instant Pot with halved onion, garlic, cumin, salt and avocado leaf. Once done, fish out the avocado leaf and onion and serve over rice. If making refried beans just mash everything together in the pot and saute to thicken as needed.

You can buy microwaveable pouches of seasoned black beans that are decent, but cost more

I have been using this copycat recipe to make Chipotle-style black beans and they come out great. I freeze the extras. There’s also a recipe for pinto beans.

I always add a little cumin and salt to mine.

I follow recipes for “instant pot Cuban black beans” and though I’m not sure I’ve ever used the same one twice, they always come out great. Some are no soak required but my husband likes beans to basically fall apart to the touch so I soak and then cook forever.

Canned beans are usually un- or minimally seasoned. You need to cook the beans with oil, garlic, and spices to taste anywhere close to restaurant beans. Canned beans shouldn't be hard, but cooking further will soften them up.

My kids love white rice and black beans. We bought beans in a can but my kids said they are hard and gross. Any idea where I can buy them and mix with white rice? Thx
