DS participates in math competition classes where they prepare for the AMC exams. He is in 7th grade but taking a class for 8th graders this year. The class specifically prepares for the AMC 10 and Mathcounts. Last year the class prepared for the AMC 8. AoPS has classes for the AMCs and specific classes for the final 5 questions, the hardest ones on each exam.
But you don’t start preparing 6 weeks before the exam. Normally the kids taking these exams are strong math students and have been participating in math competitions for a few years.
Scoring well on the AMC 10/12 and the AIME and the Junior Math Olympics or US Math Olympics are listed on college applications and can be very meaningful.
