Because like many other things the district does: vague, no transparency, lack of communication. Sigh.

Here’s what the FAQ says. They won’t really say more than this:

The review process uses a multiple measures approach that includes both district-level and external measures. The data included: the student applicant responses, Grade 7 final and Grade 8 MP1 report cards, student services^, and MAP-M (math/science programs) and MAP-R (humanities based programs). The process for the review is race-neutral, name and school blind.
^ services such as receiving special education services, ELD- English Language Development, 504 accommodations plan and Free and Reduced Meals

We were wondering, for the criteria magnets, how far they go back to look at grades? (e.g., do we have to worry about DC's Bs in 6th grade

Does anyone know how many electives are required for Blair Academy programs? The website gives lists of possible classes, but it's unclear how many are needed for the certificate.

I'm sure Blair's open house will have more info.

my first kid said no way. my second kid wanted a change of scene from our home school. The open houses were VERY helpful to get an idea of fit. He is enjoying his choice.

Following kid's lead, which is "no way!"

Talk to neighbors and siblings of kids friends.

I think they’re helpful in deciding what they offer and whether your DC might be interested. (Except for the VAC. Their presentation was entirely focused on how to apply.)

The presentations are not helpful in telling you what the programs are looking for. And that knowledge likely wouldn’t be useful. Your kid submits one application that goes to all of the programs, so there’s no customizing and no downside to checking the box for every program your DC might enjoy.

The open houses are really useful for understanding the vibe of each program, and I think the way they choose student ambassadors gives you a sense for what kind of talent they prioritize.
