I know football is different but I would have him play “on grade” (whichever group has more kids in his academic grade) - unless there is a reason not to such as very small size for age, expected lack of playing time etc.

For me it would depend on age, size, ability of the child and whether you can change later. I’d play up if the child fit size and ability with that age group, as long as in a future year DC could change easily to the younger group. I wouldn’t want my child to get stuck playing up if he is the youngest in the age group and then grows late.

The weight class is not relevant, even at 90% he is still well under any weight limits.

We are in the same situation but he's the absolute oldest in the division. So he can play with his peer group on level or play up a level, where he would be the youngest but still have many peers. He is in 90% percentile for weight and height.

My son had a birthday within a day of the cut off for pop warner. He can opt to play up or down. He’s 11. Which would you choose? He has peers in both groups.
