Ones to look into:
Rice as a reach based on SAT
Case Western
W&M, good on chem and math
Emory
Rochester
Macalester
Brandeis
Pitt

Sorry, missed part about big school but given what you’ve described I’d at least consider smaller as an option for a kid with some confidence issues.

I graduated from Pitt. I recommend Pitt. My kid was admitted to Dietrich Liberal Arts College last year for political science and also the Honors College with a small scholarship offer. OOS, 1430, 6 APs and 2 IB classes. Attending #1 choice U of M (in-state). Also considered: MSU, Indiana, Cornell.

3.98 unweighted. Only AP test so far is Chemistry. Received a 5. Did not take the APUSH exam due to confidence issues.

Senior: All As so far.

AP Physics/Mechanics
AP Calculus
Advanced Chemistry Research (3rd high school chemistry class)
AP Literature and Comp
Humanities Seminar.
Government (required)- I don't think it's AP

HOSA 3 years, HOSA ILC qualifying 2 years, Math team, Swim team, Leadership (a program at our school), and is an after school tutor a local tutoring center for Chemistry and Math.

He really wants to go to a large public university and do something with chemistry and/or STEM. He's obviously applying now, but would love some ideas in case there's somewhere we haven't thought of.

WTF is wrong with you? It’s 95th percentile.

Nowadays, a 1430 isn't getting you anything, especially coming from the DMV. It might help you if you're FGLI or from a rural area.

Go TO while they still have it. I don’t mean this to be facetious. Know several kids who got into Ivies with lower SATs because they went TO.

3.98/1430 should put him in the running for all but the top state schools. Have him retake SAT if possible. The jump from 1430 to 1500-1520 should be achievable with a bit of work.

I would think that your son would be competitive at all but the top schools. However, I would be concerned about the confidence issues that kept him from taking the AP exam.

OP here- I didn't mean to upset anyone with that- some of the schools he's interested in consider that an "average" score whether it's objectively average or not. I am trying to help him have a lot of choices so he doesn't get fixated on one or two schools that may turn him down.

Pretty much every state school is in play.
