Usually the AAU teams take a break for winter and their players play for the county or HS then.

Is this true for 5th grade as well? My son has gone to a couple of open gyms and recognized a few very good players from the rec league last year. But certainly not all of the best kids were there. I have no idea how many of those kids play AAU.

We are balancing conflicts too, with another travel sport where coach wants them at every practice. But trying to get on coaches’ radar knowing he is a long shot. We are not plugged in to the basketball scene and more hoping that height and potential can work in his favor.

The talent at tryout is better.

My son is fairly good and thought he would make a team based on open gym but then at tryouts, all these better players come.

Try an open gym for a large org nearby that had multiple teams (ideally three) in his age group last year. Orgs with just one team are hard to break into.

My daughter's team had an open gym earlier this week. Some of their best players from last year showed up (and some did not), as well as some good kids from other teams shopping around but who will probably stick with their former teams. And some girls who have only played house league. In previous years most of the weaker players at the open gyms didn't show up for tryouts as they assumed they were not skilled enough to make the team.

Hello, My child attended one last night. Is it safe to assume that the talent present generally reflects the skill level of the eventual chose team? He was one of the weakest players so we should probably focus elsewhere then waste time trying out here? I was suprised at how good the other players were. 6th grade.
