So what happens to a kid who is expelled?

Expulsion is required by federal law and remains the only actual offense that a student can be expelled for in DCPS.

Long term suspension or expulsion, if this version of Chapter 25 is still accurate.

This is correct. When we had an incident (not gun related) at our DCPS we were shown the levels of offenses and consequences. Bringing a gun to school is pretty much guaranteed expulsion.

I'd like to see some published reports of the form "what exactly were you thinking?" every time a kid brings a gun to school and isn't trying to get murder-suicided

Unbelievable that a kid who brings a gun to school would simply be transferred.

Disciplinary policy can't include criminal justice consequences -- only the police and district attorney can do that.

Consequences can range from short term suspension to long term suspension to expulsion/involuntary transfer (which means he would attend a different DCPS).

Dear Parents and Families of Jackson-Reed High School,

At Jackson-Reed, we are committed to ensuring a safe learning environment for all students. Communicating home about critical incidents that arise during the school day is important to maintaining strong partnerships with families.

This afternoon, school administration was notified that a handgun was detected in a student’s belongings during weapons abatement procedures. Per the district’s security and emergency protocols, we immediately contacted the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and DC Public Schools (DCPS) Police, who arrived quickly to confiscate the weapon and launch their investigative proceedings.

Please be assured that no one was harmed, and the weapon did not make it past our abatement equipment and security officers. The matter was handled promptly and in accordance with our security procedures. All students and staff remained safe and secure during this time, and there was no disruption to the school day. We will cooperate fully with MPD and follow disciplinary actions in accordance with Chapter 25 of the DC Municipal Regulations (DCMR) as applicable.
