Sometimes you'll get suggestions that you've never thought of. I don't find this silly at all.

what is silly? the OP asked a very specific question about water resistant/breathable jackets vs. waterproof ones and even stated a reason why they were asking. Sounds like a reasonable question to me.

Here's my not totally responsive answer: my son goes the cold gear under layer route mentioned above. We don't use a water resistant jacket in training because he won't be able to use it in a match, and might not be prepared to handle a cold, rainy match day.

It baffles me why people would come and ask such silly questions. Where is the common sense?

Dry socks for the car ride home

Our kids wear long sleeve base layers (like under armour) and then their training kit over it. Occasionally (if dry), they'll wear club hoodies.

Dry fit shirt and a lightweight rain jacket is our go to's.

Beach towel. Always have one in your car. Also put an empty trash bag in their backpack, so they "hopefully" remember to put their backpack in it when it's sitting in the rain.
