Based on my Jeep owning neighbors, the like of reliability seems like a plus, since it gives them a chance to indulge in their real hobby, working on their Jeep.

I see first Jeep was completed in 1941, and the first G-wagon/Puch was created in 1972, as a military vehicle, but didn't come to the US until 2002.

It was never intended for the US market, but it started to be brought in through grey market imports and sold for insane markups; it used to be very much a utility vehicle and it was being sold for luxury prices. Mercedes isn't dumb and started to officially sell it here directly

We do a lot of camping/kayaking/mtn biking and I think it'd be fun to own one. Too bad they've been co-opted by the RWNJs.

Because people are signaling that they are fun and may drive on a beach or possibly on a trail to a mountain lake or perhaps through a field to a quiet cabin. The reality is that most will never even see grass let alone a trail

OP: I have had similar thoughts. Jeep owners are loyal; many tell me that this is their fourth Jeep.

I like Jeeps, but hate the subpar quality.

Actually, I think you're wrong about resale value, at least with regard to the Wrangler; I think they hold value fairly well. Personally, I would like a vintage Cherokee from back when they were a box on big wheels.

I have a wrangle. Lots of fun, drives well.

Many people love fun cars and don't care about the negatives.

European cars depreciate really fast, and cost a lot to fix

Tesla has had launch quality issues and takes a long time to get body repairs done

People with money don't care about repair costs.

They're constantly given low reliability, resale and safety ratings from Consumer Reports and countless other automobile reviewers. While some may argue the tough American image they portray, they're currently owned by Stellantis, which is headquartered in the Netherlands. Everyone I know who owns one has had some major repair come up prior to hitting 100K, and many of them are extremely overpriced for the quality you get. (Grand Wagoneer)

Why on earth do some many people buy Jeep brand vehicles?

The obvious response I'm sure I'll get is "They're fun cars", but I'll counter with my previous comments and ask if a fun vehicle is worth all the above listed aggravations and warnings from so many reputable industry experts.
