9th grade at J-R is the “lost year.” Just let your kid hang with friends, play sports, and enjoy video games.

Homework in high school for me was all about knowing things like dates in history, dead philosophers, foreign languages, reading and writing and I still can't write.
I wish I had skipped all this and just done computer (anything), economics, and math. Find some ninth grade workbooks and see if he can do the math. Heck with the rest though Spanish has serve me well.

This is the time to load up on EC’s and get that experience! Having little homework and a chance to get great grades without is a godsend!

The DCPS late work policy changed this year and every teacher we saw at J-R BTS night told us about the new policy. Make sure your senior is aware.

LOL - I have a senior at J-R -it is possible to get thru J-R and get good grades doing minimal amounts of homework and particularly reading.

Now the work is there to do if your kid is so inclined but J-R bends over backwards to make sure that all kids get good grades - essentially any deadline for work is really the end of the semester when grades close and I have no idea how the avalanche of stuff that gets turned in on the last day even gets graded so my assumption is most of it isn't.

I taught HS up until the pandemic. My daughter's workload is on par with what we had at my last school but only a fraction of what I used to receive "back in my day." So far, I haven't supplemented at home. I'm letting her get adjusted and waiting to see what the first batch of assessments look like.

If I see anything that concerns me regarding her mastery of the content, then I'll take action. For now, I'm letter her adjust to high school.
