AP World was the best class for my DC. It was the class that actually taught him to write. He was a math/science kid and his writing needed some help. They wrote more in AP World than all of his English classes in High School combined. It was great. It really set him up for college.

I graduated from Radford University back in 2005. I might be a long time ago, but the classes were basically based on EXAMS. Very little homework was given. English 101 had like 3 essays per semester that was about it.
So what is the point of them giving them so much work for AP classes?


Because these are HIGH SCHOOLERS taking college classes. There are very few kids who have developed the study skills to independently keep up with information for the final exam. Because they are developing the skills that will be needed in college, like writing and document analysis. Because practice makes perfect. Because very few college classes have that exam model anymore, because kids do not do the work anymore.

+1 omg bless you. My poor kid is in the same boat. We have no idea why this teacher is assigning gobs of work. It is absolutely insane. My son is also spending hours on it. The sad part is the work is only for completion. The teacher doesn’t teach - just assigns reading (they read it outloud in class old school round robin style) and then they are given these ridiculous assignments that keep them busy the rest of the period. They cannot ever possibly be finished with them.


The teacher is teaching the kids how to study.

If your kid doesn't want to study and learn, then just scribble through the work and don't waste time making it correct.

I agree with you OP. I don’t recall that much outside work in my college classes. Mainly reading and then projects like papers.

DD is taking APUSH and they have these super long notes packets they have to create.

Maybe the classes your kid prior to these had little to no homework do this seems like a lot. My kid had hours of homework starting in 6th grade so he was used to it. Public schools don’t assign much to be done at home due to equity. It’s a college level class so expect a large workload.

I am the PP and I have this same suspicion. But why would the teacher want kids to drop down??


Don't immediately bash teachers.

Anyone can sign up for AP classes, even lazy students, even dumb ones, even smart kids who are not nearly prepared for them. The admin team sees the teacher's score report over the summer. No teacher wants too many 1s and 2s.

What school are you at?

Is your kid taking too high of a level of class for their writing abiliry or learning style?

AP world is a ton of writing.

APush and AP bio are not very demanding classes. They are two of the easier AP core classes. AP lit has a lot of writing, but not an overwhelming amount.

Check with the teachers to see if your kid should drop down to honors. It is too late to drop a level to dual enrollment.
