It is still a huge benefit. Schools with ed2 are ones that know many of their candidates would ed1 to a t25 school. Since most won’t get in, they can get top students to commit to them instead.
Actually, the Emory admissions officer said the reverse at the info session we attended. He said ED1 acceptance rates were much higher than ED2, which is just a point or two higher than RD there, because the pool is kids who aimed to high for ED1 and make the same mistake for ED2.
It isn’t a huge benefit at most schools the way ED1 is.
