Some elementary schools don't allow parents to work in the classrooms. Principals can decide this and many are concerned about student privacy issues (i.e., parents talking about other people's children).

PTA tried to organize this for years at my kids' ES. Principal was never interested. They'd rather it be a zoo than have to deal with parent volunteers.

The most obvious areas for volunteers would be for lunch and recess.

I used to volunteer for recess duty and it was good to have an extra pair of adult hands and it was also nice to see and get to know kids other than my own. It was a very low-key easy way to connect with the kids, and I enjoyed it very much.

No need to dump on OP for wanting to help at some level. I get what she means - this other kind of volunteering is different from organizing stuff as a room parent, which is a lot of email, logistics etc like work rather than just direct but limited time with kids at lunch or admin tasks like photocopying.

I used to go in once a week to photocopy and help the teacher with bulletin boards. I wasn't usually in the classroom, but it was a help for the teacher.

Tell the teacher what days/times you are available and see if she could use your help for something.

Recess is often an option. Our DC's school sometimes has reading volunteers during the class day and you can also usually volunteer during holiday parties like for Valentine's day.

I do know a few parents who volunteered beyond that by talking directly to the front office. Usually they would do things like photocopy papers or help deliver mail, help organize gym equipment, that kind of thing.

If you think being a room parent is "too much work" maybe volunteering isn't for you?

The PTA should also have volunteer options. I will say wanting to see what your kids are doing/check in on them is not likely to be a huge part of what most schools are looking for.

Why don’t you ask the school what they need?

Volunteering is supposed to benefit the school, not just you and your family.

I have 2 kids in ES at different grades. I have a little bit extra time to volunteer this school year. My kids are just happy to see me at school, so I prefer to volunteer at the time that I am able to see their faces. I don't want to be a homeroom parent( too much work), so what else is good for me to volunteer? I just want to see how they are doing inside school, and especially the little one that just enters K.
