With the easy availability of cheap costumes on Amazon, EVERYONE and their mother is now in costume at the Renaissance Festival. And yes, most of it is polyester. It isn't like the RenFair of years ago, when costumes were harder to find.

I found one of the few fantasy medieval cotton dresses available on Amazon for DD, with cotton petticoats and a (polyester) flowered corset belt. There are also full length mock corsets (without ribs) and I think also ones with ribbing. It was blessedly cheap and it's easy to clean - you'll return home with very dirty hems! Sellers on Amazon often claim their fabrics are cotton, when they're actually polyester, so you have to check the reviews to see what people say.

For myself, I found a vintage Reformation linen corset-style top on Poshmark, as well as an Anthropologie full length cotton skirt with built-in petticoat in the same color. They look great together and that's what I wear to the Festival. I've worn the linen top with jeans, and the skirt with other tops - both very good purchases.

DP. It's a fun way to spend a fall afternoon! Have you been?

My kid had a blast going to this for a number of years, in MD, when he was younger. Sometimes with friends, sometimes just the two of us (DH passed). I did not dress up (wore regular fall clothing/jeans), yet many adults (who are not 12) did. Not my thing, the dress up part, but enjoyed the festiveness of the others who did so.

They will rent you a basic costume. You can bring (or buy there) things like a hat, belt, shawl. Or if you want your own clothes, try a long skirt and peasant top, with or without corset. You can wrap a long shawl around your bust/waist for a similar look without an actual corset.

If you have long hair, the hair braiders do beautiful work and getting braided may be a reason not to bring a hat or flower crown of your own.

We don't go every year but it's really fun. I love the jousting show and next time we go I plan to just post myself there most of the day, to see the different acts. Have fun!

I second the advice to buy something there- especially if you can talk to the vendor and that's their livelihood

Most of the women who dress up for Renfair push their boobs way out. It's all you see.

I do this all the time. My usual outfit is something like leggings (the skinny jean trend was great for this) with a peasant blouse and a chunky leather belt. I made a cheap corset out of leftover pleather my kids had for a class project — just use a hole puncher or scissors to make lacing holes and a long cord or shoelace to lace it. If you have a maxi skirt that works instead of leggings. Especially that kind that was popular this year with the weird ruffle clouds on the bottom. Wear ankle boots as it’s very dusty or muddy. If you want a more masculine look it’s really easy to make a man peasant style blouse out of a man’s undershirt — just cut off the neck part and cut halfway down the front then do the same lacing trick. Belt and wesr with leggings. If you have a toy wooden or foam sword for your kids dress up, tuck it into your belt band.

I also bought one of the Amazon dresses for my teen and it’s actually really comfortable—they are made of rayon at this point, not polyester, so they are very soft and cool.

Have fun! My teens go with their friends now so I haven’t gone this year! It’s a very non judgmental space — people like PP who are “embarrassed” typically self select out!

Corset like top and flowy skirt- but dress for the weather. Last time I went I dressed like my everyday self with a hoodie since it was a smidge chilly. My friend wore a light blouse and skirt and froze the whole time

They sell costumes there. You could wear something plan and then plan on buying a skirt or whatever. I’m sure those vendors would value your business so much more than any online option!

Those floral headpieces are really nice. Maybe you could get one and reuse for Halloween sometime? Also any corset-lile tops with a long flowy skirt, if you have or want to buy something like that which could be re-styled for other occasions.

I love dressing up for it but luckily have a friend with those dresses. Agree the nice ones are expensive.

I'm going to my first Renaissance festival in October. I want to dress up but would rather not a full polyester costume on Amazon. Any ideas? Ways to style regular clothes that I could wear again but would nod to the Renaissance era?
