Some people need to be micromanaged. Some need it at first and can grow out of it.

PP's suggestions to do everything in writing is correct. If whatever system you have has logs, you could also be documenting when they are in there doing work.

Today Email: "John, I need xyz done no later than 9/12 COB."

9/13 Email in same thread if you have no update: "John, what is the status of xyz?"

Just create a really easy paper trail of how he fails to meet all expectations set for him.

+ 1. This is part of learning to manage as well!

Sounds like he has serious ADHD. I 5hink you're kinda screwed here. Start process to fire. At this age he won't get better unless medicated and you can not suggest that or even mention adhd.

We have a new hire that has been working here for like 10 months. He is in his late 20s, act like newly college grads, and I am supposed to be his supervisor. I have assigned him to work on something, and he either keeps making same minor mistakes or he takes forever to get something done. He does not seem to slack off, but I don't know why it takes so long time to finish a job that can be done in few hours, and it takes him 3 days. We have to bill every hours we work to client, and I have told him this. I have asked him to mail something, and I have to remind him day 1, day 2, and day 3 to mail them out. He always says that he will do it in a minutes, soon, all end in 30 mins, but things are not even done after a few days after.

I have never been a supervisor, and my boss tells me that I can use him to relieve my workload. At the end of day, I am working my asses off to take care and wrap up on everything because I cannot rely on him. I don't even dare to assign him to do something that is beyond "easy" tasks because the mistakes he keeps making & the way he completes work so slowly. Boss likes him because he talks nice and he keeps telling other team that he has a lot of time to help with everyone. He comes in early and leaves late. He is the only staff that we can use. He has problem with time management, and I am not sure how I could use him to relieve my workload. Any tips?

I need to learn how to use him and act like his supervisor. I have set him deadline, but he never completes it. He never tells me reasons why he cannot meet deadline. My career goal is to learn to supervise him, and that is a goal that my boss assigns me.
