Like what? I visit a relative near there frequently but they pretty much only eat at home.

Lots of hole-in-the-wall delis such as this one in Hoboken. Go a couple of towns up the river and have amazing Cuban food in West New York and North Bergen. Great Italian bakeries in Lyndhurst, Nutley. Any cuisine you could dream of in Jersey City. Newark is the heart of Portuguese food.

"G" by Mike Isabella was the closest I came to a decent Chicken Parm sub here in the District, and then he had to go and get cancelled. I moved back to Jersey and am in bagel and parm heaven.

DC has better food than it used to and there are some good sandwich shops here (agree on mangialardos and would add a litteri and sundevich plus ghostburger for cheesesteaks -- oh and compliments only is good too).

But I also think if you've lived in places with really great food DC will just never measure up. A lot of people here have only lived places with mediocre food. Natives to the area or midwest transplants. A lot of international people here too and while some come from places with great food (and sometimes import it here) others come from countries with pretty bad food or really limited options. If you are from a place that has a lot of great food -- especially great food at a low price -- it's just hard to adjust to DC where you have to go hunting for those places.

Why can’t DMV have truly good sandwich places like Fiore’s:

One of the best sandwiches on the entire east coast, if not the entire country. What passes off as bread and hoagies/subs in this region is really sad. Fiore’s is so legendary that Frank Sinatra used to demand mozz be flied out from its store in NJ to him out in Las Vegas.

Philly has a lot of shops like this as well as NY. DC region is just super sad for good sandwiches. Why are sandwich standards so low around here?

Why? Because Italians.

Ooh, which sandwich in particular? I occasionally pass through Hoboken, will have to add this to the bucket list.

“It’s sandwich day!”

It’s the kinda place where you can just invent your own. Amazeballs. You tell the, what meat you want. How much of that beautiful mozz you want. Highly recommend the roast peppers too. DMV just doesn’t have a real good sandwich shop like this.

Agreed that Fiore’s is awesome (I lived in Hoboken for a couple years) and the sandwich/ hoagie/ sub space in DC is generally lacking. Mangialardos on Capitol Hill is pretty damn good.

You're welcome to go back to NYC where you can enjoy sandwiches the way you like them?
