McLean's second team was not good. He has a chance at making that OR the Falls Church team which played in the lowest division. The Vienna second team was also pretty weak but I think would be hard to break into.

So prioritize: (1) McLean, (2) Falls Church
(3) Vienna/Great Falls. Take him to the open gyms and reach out to the coaches ahead of time.

If you are OK with a drive, two other options are Herndon (may be hard up for players), FPYC (their second team was really not good) or Gum Springs (2 teams, both average). But it can get old driving in the dark on weeknights all winter long to far away practices-its a long season.

If he's not in the assigned zip codes, the coaches have to be willing to use an exception on him.

Can you try out for more than one FCYBL?

We live close to McLean, Vienna and Great Falls.

Unless he is really, really good (and it sounds like he is not) OR 6'4, making one of these teams will be a real reach.

He is good, not really really good. He is very athletic and has played soccer, baseball, tennis and golf his entire life. We strongly prefer him to play golf but his heart is set on basketball.

5th or 6th grade would have been the team to try out. FCBYL ends in 8th, so the teams are pretty set

That's not really helpful advice unless you can lend OP's kid a time machine.

He was playing travel soccer at that age. If we had a time machine, instead of going to all those soccer practices and games, we could have gone to these basketball workouts and trainings. DS did not pick up a basketball until he was 11. Yes, I know this is very late.

It's by zip code, this was last year's list, but they are usually relatively consistent

I have a new basketball player who wants to try out for a 13Uv basketball team. Last year, he tried out for a few with zero skills training and we had travel plans so he missed a lot of tryouts also. We naively thought he could try out and make a team. Ds has been training for the past 6 months daily. I know he is late to the game but DS loved basketball.

We live in NOVA.
