Also, if you are planning on using the rapidpass emissions inspection site and you are nearing your registration renewal date, be sure to drive by it more than once. I drove my car through one two weeks ago, and did not receive a letter in the mail from rapidpass. I called to follow-up and they did not register my car driving through. The representative suggested that i drive through it more than once if I need it is a timely manner. She said that sometimes the sun can make it difficult for the camera to catch a license plate.

I think the advantage is that you need to have the emissions report to renew your registration. You do not need to have an updated safety inspection to renew your registration. Of course, you need to have an updated safety inspection every year, but your registration renewal is not dependent upon it being in your record while an emissions inspection is required. I like the rapidpass emission inspections because it saves a little time. You drive by one, they send you the information that you have been recorded online/or through the mail. You pay them $30 and they transfer your emissions pass results to the DMV. Super easy. Yes, I still get the state safety inspection, but I don't have to sit there at the inspection station quite as long waiting for the extra inspection to be completed. Just my two cents!

I need to renew my registration in Virginia. Arlington County, if that matters. I see that I can get the emissions inspection done by driving through a RAPIDpass location instead of at a gas station. But don't I still need to go to a gas station for the safety inspection? So what's the advantage of doing the RAPIDpass for your inspection?
