She needs to make a good connection with another top player, where she can always link up on plays. Top players will feed off each other and they will both learn more, read each others plays and movements and shine on the field more... shake and bake! She has time, the season just started. Try to find out what, if anything, the other top players are doing outside of practice... skills clinics, camps, ID sessions, training sessions... perhaps she can bond and start picking up on their plays in another setting as well. I think there is time. We had a few 15 year olds really pick it up after a season. Kids grow a lot in 1 season, no one mores than the new players!

Has your DD watched a lot of soccer while she’s been working hard on the physical and technical? If not, that’s one of your answers. The top players are probably absorbing their coaching better bc they have seen so much of game and can visualize whatever they’re being coached about and have the technical skills and confidence to execute them.

Watched a few high level D1 commits recently. The lines they run are just different. So much creativity. And they have insane ball skills too. Of course they are fast and physical but plenty of girls are fast and physical.

What I noticed is the biggest difference between a good player and a high level player is what they do without the ball. Drawing defenders when necessary, creating scoring opportunities, etc. Going where the ball is vs going where you want the ball.

Yes yes and yes.
But there is something about the national level play that I can’t put my finger on. Like it’s super high intensity to every ball but somehow they all know who is responsible for that ball. My DD can hold the intensity but would end up on a double team, for example. Then next ball she might not commit because someone else is going for it. It’s like an unwritten language that the ECNL girls have and RL or GA don’t. (Not to pick on any league, this is huge generalities).

It's not necessarily hopeless, does she watch professional soccer, does she read up strategy and invest energy into better understanding the game itself?

For the formations the team plays (say a 4-3-3) does she understand what she is supposed to do all the time?

The majority of practice team at clubs beyond U10 is learning what to do when.

High work rate and high intensity all the time and all on their own. Usually it can't be taught.

High motor is someone who never resting and being constantly involved in plays. I'm not sure it's apt for soccer where knowing when to expend energy is important. Usually it's a football player who plays hard every down

This doesn't always work. The best players also play faster. Most of the better players are high-motor, which is just natural.

Right, so when you aren’t, then there is no catch up, is that it?

Serious question, if you want to be snarky please go elsewhere. DD is U15. Has been a very good 2nd level player for a few years. Has worked insanely hard recently and is much better in multiple ways.
Watched a scrimmage today and what I noticed was that the best girls weren’t necessarily faster, stronger, or more skilled—they just knew what to do in any situation. They are the top level girls. You can see the years of top level coaching and playing quality teams in HOW they approach the game.
As much as my DD has improved, there is a long way to go if she wants to be recruited.
Is catch up possible?? Or is this kind of a lost cause?
