All this to say I don’t see why a fourth grader couldn’t wear it but they’d probably be happier playing in a synthetic raincoat.

How will you feel if he loses it? If that will bother you, then no. If you can shrug it off, then fine.

I have had mine for 30 years and never bought for children until they were grown. Now I search out originals on poshmark etc because they are china made these days.

This. Totally fine to wear unless you or the giver will be upset if it gets lost. It’s not a common kid brand/style here, so unlikely to be confused for someone else’s coat – which was always the most likely mixup at our house.

I assume OP is referring to it getting lost. This would not be a covetable item for kids.

I’ve never heard of Barbour so chances are most 4th graders haven’t either unless you’re at some super expensive bougie school.
Let him wear it if he likes it.

If it fits, of course he can wear it. Otherwise you'll be kicking yourself for not making good use of a quality item before he outgrows it.

Same goes for everything you value that you're afraid of using, like your fancy china. Use it! Life is short.

How does a 4th grader even know what Barbour is? Its used. No one is going to steal it. If he loses stuff and you will be upset, don’t let him take it. My 4th grader wouldn’t even wear a coat unless he was sledding.

No. My DS lost several jackets in elementary school by leaving them on the playground at recess. Some turned up in lost and found, others did not.
