The Road from Coorain by Jill Ker Conway about the Australian Outback. Amazing memoir. Conway eventually becomes the first female president of Smith College.

I really enjoyed A Good Provider is One Who Leaves. It's nonfiction if that influences OP one way or another.

"A Suitable Boy," which I recommend for anyone not fortunate to have read it. Yes, it's very long. I promise you'll wish it were longer.

Stolen (2009) by Lucy Christopher is set in the Australian outback and is deeply immersed in that. The place itself is almost a character in the book. Definitely worth reading.

Maybe not what you have in mind, but Colm Tobin nails the tiniest details of the Irish.

“The Storm We Made.”
“Cutting for Stone” and/or “Covenant of Water”
“Scatterlings.”
“The God of Small Things.”
“The Lowland.”
“Hungry Ghosts.”
“The Pickup.” (Or any Nadine Gordimer.)

I have loved books like this. Think: Kite Runner, Pachinko, any Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Memoirs of a Geisha etc.

Any similar suggestions?
