+1 My kid has 27 in her class at grade 3 and the other grade 3 class has 28. I was told by other parents (not sure if it's true) that they don't consider an additional class until it goes over 30 kids. We're lucky that the teachers are experienced and great.

Every class at 2 over the "guideline" before an additional allocation would be considered. Unless there's a hiring freeze. Or the year has started and there aren't any more hours to allocate. Or they just don't feel like bothering with it.

I teach at a Title I school with 21 kids in a kindergarten class. The other 3 classes have 20. The cap is 18. Think we've been able to get anything? Nope.

I am really not seeing an issue here. 27 is just an arbitrary number, that’s all.

27 kids with just 1 teacher in elementary school is ridiculous. Do they have an aide or helper too?

At a small school there can be huge fluxuations.. 2 -27 kid class with 54 kids or 3 19 kids classes with 56 kids.

This is typical class size at wood acres and it has been fine.

I'm surprised because Bannockburn has a reputation for smaller class sizes, which is something that gets repeated ad nauseam but is apparently not true.

Bannockburn has gotten lucky over the years with having just a few too many kids enrolled and getting that 3rd teacher.

Thanks to one of my kids I have a lot of experience with other MCPS schools. You truly have no idea what a problem is. Bannockburn is a well-run school.

So?
A couple years we had 27-28. I think the 28 was over the limit but a couple kids joined at the last minute and the district would not allocate another teacher.

You’d need 28 in each class before a 3rd class was on the table. Better to have two experienced teachers…

Obviously not the end of the world, but definitely a surprise and a disappointment. I don't envy the administrators, who have to message this basically as "Whelp, we tried really hard to find a third teacher but struck out . . .".
