I would go for this info alone. Really helpful to level set and to make sure you communicate where your kid needs to way more on top of things (asking questions by email for paper trail etc). Most teachers are lovely and we haven’t had many issues.

If you are anxious about their school, it helps to see the teachers and classes. If not, you can skip, there's no insider info being shared

It seems a message to your kids that you value school. It's also nice to put faces to names you keep hearing about.

I went for 7th grade. I don’t know if they have them for 8… if they do, I’ll go again. I like to get a feel for the teachers and expectations of the kids.

Yes, it was surprising to me to hear what teachers expected parents to do. I had thought middle school would be all hands off.

Also helpful to learn about basic expectations so when kid says repeatedly "I have no homework" or "I need to be on the computer for five hours tonight because I have so much homework," I have a better understanding of the more likely scenario.

And good to learn basic policies about things like cell phones, chatGPT, grammarly, etc.

I go to scope out the competition

DC is a 7th grader and DH went. Parents had chance to go to each classrooms ( the courses your DC is taking), and each teacher gave a presentation for something like their policy and calendar of events etc. It’s worth going especially if your DC us new to the school ( 7th grader).

Our school didn’t have one for returning families. I probably won’t go to back to school night
