The entire Girls Survive series is about bravery. Girls, I know, but maybe your son would enjoy the stories too? I wish they hadn’t gendered that series; it’s really neat historical fiction

The Railway Children by Edith Nesbit
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

These books are old, but really good for children and both about bravery / overcoming fears without having any kind of scary or threatening content.
