Mine had a regular schedule first semester last year (when they were a HS senior), and a half-day schedule the second semester, with a part-time job on weekday afternoons. And they're starting this fall at a high-academic SLAC.

I teach in HS. The kids with half day schedules in school all have something else they are going to - Edison, MC, job, internship, etc.

Your kid is lying to you, OP. And if they’re college bound, a half-day schedule is a no-no as another poster mentioned.

Once the first semester is over, my 12th grader will actually have a half day schedule.

What are they trying to do here? Slack off? Or get a job or internship?

Most kids have full day schedules.

Duel enrollment or other academic classes that fill out the schedule aren't part of a "half day" schedule.

Very few kids get internships that are as valuable as advanced classes. But some lower-income kids do have time-consuming jobs, and get the minimum coursework for graduation.

If your kid isn't in either category, full schedule it is.

Nope. Finishing up requirements for the IB diploma. This year will be as academically packed as junior year, plus college applications.

Kid has a job and can line up a white-collar internship. All credits are met. Taking the remaining SR requirements and APs.

Certainly not! That would be the kiss of death for college admissions. At least for the first semester. There's a place on the College App to list your second semester courses as well, so best not to slack off completely there either. Most seniors take a full schedule, but get lower grades during the second semester because they're burned out. Just as long as they don't fail any second semester class, usually colleges do not rescind admission.
