Subject: Are juniors ever on JV team?
In our MCPS school there were no juniors on JV soccer. Not sure if it wasn't allowed or just wasn't done but it was certainly well known, which did weed kids out. We did have a handful of superstar freshman and sophomores on varsity though. This was a school like PP where there were more than 100 kids trying out for 40-45 spots. And when you take out the 10-12 or so returning varsity kids that means there were 90+ trying out for 30 spots.

So yes, sometimes Juniors are on JV but due to rules, cuts, and sometimes their pride (they decline) it is not all that common. Also important to note that LOTS of good kids were cut, and cut for different reasons. From what I see my kid respects the hell out of a lot of boys who were cut (he was not) which is good to see.
Oh for sure. At our school MLS next kids are not allowed to play HS and they are certainly better. I think there's room for lots of kids to be talented, albeit at varying levels: those too good for HS, those playing HS, and some cut from HS.

I should add that our HS coach does a ton of summer scrimmages and workouts and also has off season workout opportunities. Many per week, advertised to all. They are not required but if your kid can make it to as many as they can that's a leg up. Communicating about why they can't is also good. I don't think this determines the team but I do think it's a factor for Varsity for sure and I wouldn't be surprised if two kids are on the line that a coach would pick a kid they know comes to this stuff and demonstrates passion.

HS coaches generally suck.
Always try out. Who knows what happened.
If he doesn’t make it and he really wants to be involved ask to be a team manager or better yet be the team manager for the girls team.

It just depends on the depth of the bench and position/willingness to play other positions.
If your kids ego can handle the hit if they don’t make varsity, I’d strongly encourage trying out and accepting JV this year if that’s where they land.

What club team is he playing on. If he's playing rec or NCSL then he won't be able to compete with kids who are playing for high leagues.

My kid goes to a big public HS with an excellent JV and V team. Tried out for JV as a sophomore and not selected. He is actually a good player (I think probably as good as ones who did make the team) but I think maybe didn’t have a good day or coach just didn’t see his good plays in the scrimmages. Would it be at all worth trying out again as a junior, or is he just done? He still plays on a club team.
