Yes. We have found the quality of teachers at the tennis clubs at the lower levels to be really spotty. They do not make it fun and do not try to increase interest in the sport. Once you find the right setting, then you can get more serious. And once that happens, you can find good private coaches. I found the resources for beginner or not-too-serious players very hit or miss, more so than for other sports, not sure why. We did private tennis clubs rather than country clubs, but friends who are at country clubs said the same.

Start with group lessons, then move to private or clinics once your child gets better. My child plays seriously, and in addition to high school team, has done clinics at Skyline Sport & Health, Burke Racquet, and Advantage Tennis throughout the years.

Oh, forgot because it is not near me - also does Hank Harris' clinics, which are close to where my ex lives.

Well, they begin at the country club.

Or parents teach them on public courts.

Are you a member of one of the pools in Ft Hunt? Most of them have tennis clinics and summer leagues, but I think the level of competitiveness will vary by pool club. It wouldnt compare to sports like baseball, but its a start. A lot of the Ft Hunt pool clubs use Pros To You to run their programs.

We started with a few classes through the FCPA rec programs. Then, once my son really liked it, we started to take regular red ball classes at a rec club. Then moved through the orange, green ball, etc.
