COVID changed things. I now live in a touristy beach town in California. We got to experience an entire year without tourists. It was fantastic.

Then add to that how short term rentals are increasing property rates. So many housing units are being converted from single family housing to short term vacation rentals. Young locals are getting completely priced out of being able to live in our town.

I’ve lived in DC for >30 years and I don’t hate tourists at all! Honestly I often find them kind of charming. I think it’s because we have the infrastructure for them. What makes people cranky is when tourists impede their daily life or destroy natural areas.

I was born and raised in DC and I have no problem with tourists. I think it’s super petty and whiny to complain about tourists anywhere.

Hmm. I grew up in a summer tourist town, and tourists were indeed our bread and butter. We didn’t hate them, we depended on them and their money to pay our bills!

I grew up going to the Jersey shore, and the locals said "Bennies [or Shoobies] go home" all the time, even though the summer folks were keeping the towns afloat, so to speak.

My trip to Paris in 2023 was really nice. And we made a small side trip to Provins and my family was very nicely treated by a local cafe owner. I was able to have a friendly conversation in French with him. He explained off-season public transport to us. It was definitely the best experience of my three trips to France.

When I lived in DC, I used to help tourists use the Metro fare card machine. Just a few seconds of explanation would keep the line moving.

Because locals figured out that the service economy was keeping their communties afloat.

Dealing with tourists for a short busy season is MUCH different than dealing with them all the time, year round.

Doesn’t everyone hate tourists? People in DC feel the same. I was born and raised here. People don’t take time to understand the flow of where to stand on Metro escalators, they stop the flow of traffic while walking, tour groups of kids are obnoxious, etc…

Tourists are annoying. Are you in DC?

We’ve been researching what we want to do next summer. From San Antonio to Moab to Traverse City to Ogunquit, we’ve been researching on Reddit, travel forums, and Instagram for up-to-date pictures and info. And locals of these places HATE tourists! But aren’t they the bread and butter of these places? And the people posting are so young! At least the ones who have photo avatars, so you would assume all of these places were “touristy” before they were born, but especially before they chose to root their lives in these places as adults? So why the vitriol and hate? They post such angry posts about tourists, post bumper stickers and whole license plates that say “GO HOME” or “G0H0ME” or some other variation. Help it make sense!
