Hmm. I grew up in a summer tourist town, and tourists were indeed our bread and butter. We didn’t hate them, we depended on them and their money to pay our bills!

My trip to Paris in 2023 was really nice. And we made a small side trip to Provins and my family was very nicely treated by a local cafe owner. I was able to have a friendly conversation in French with him. He explained off-season public transport to us. It was definitely the best experience of my three trips to France.
When I lived in DC, I used to help tourists use the Metro fare card machine. Just a few seconds of explanation would keep the line moving.
