Subject: Waltonwood- Ashburn, VA
My mom was there for independent living and is there now in memory care. I moved her to another place close by for assisted living (highly rated, expensive and pretty but just awful treatment). Waltonwood didn’t have a suitable apartment for her when it was time for the transition to assisted so I moved her to the other place. In retrospect that was a mistake.
I’ve been absolutely thrilled with the care she’s received in memory care. I pop through assisted living when I visit and it doesn’t seem like a ton of people are participating in the offered activities but they do have those activities.
I’d talk to them about your concerns and mention the rude staff member. It takes awhile for the elders to adjust to anything new. I know there were activities in independent living that my mom didn’t really participate in and, aside from a few friends she made there, she was pretty much on her own. Assisted seems to be a little more hands on but they still need to get themselves where they need to go. Memory care they keep them busy all day, every day.
The only other place I considered for assisted living was Ashleigh near the hospital. Their independent and assisted living are the same- the person stays in their apartments but they add the additional needed services. They appeared well run during my limited visits. If they can afford it maybe a caregiver shift wouldn’t be a bad idea. Depending on their needs maybe they could save up the things they need help with for when the person comes.
Definitely don’t do Tribute at One Loudoun. To get any assistance the person needed to go to the front desk and ask, and assistance may or may not show up.

I am wondering if anybody has experience with Waltonwood. My in-laws moved to their assisted living program several months ago. They were used to having in-home caregivers that were more attentive to them, and had a hard time with adjustment. We encouraged them to give it a try, but now we are seeing things that upset us, too. When they ask for help, they don’t get it in a timely manner, and one of the staff people is rude to them. We are considering hiring private caregivers, and I’m even wondering if we should move them elsewhere.
