Which is why I said I was comfortable because I knew the driver but would be hesitant if I didn’t. I was in OPs situation and explained how I handled it, which OP asked for.
OP didn’t say if their kid was the driver or the passenger. If the driver, OP could say only x number of passengers. Or they could talk with some parents and have an approved list of who can be in the car. If the passenger, OP could dictate who their kid drives with.

My kid’s coach doesn’t encourage it en masse, but if he knows a kid needs a ride that particular game he will text the older kids to see if anyone can give a ride.
Coach doesn’t know if older kid is driving themselves or a parent is actually driving.

In VA, you can only drive one other person until you’ve had your license for a certain amount of time or you are a certain age.
Can you explain more about where they are going and how far it is?
When we were kids we definitely would pile into cars and drive all around together. I’m sure the coach was the same. Maybe someone just needs to explain the rules have changed?

SOP here, because the school doesn't provide busses, and there are kids who's parents cannot drive them to the game location at another school. I always drove my kid and went to their games and always drive a couple other kids

Limit your response to how it affects YOUR child, OP. If you don’t want large numbers of kids riding in your child’s car, tell your DC that he is restricted to two passengers at a time—then your DC can blame it on his parents.
Or if your child is the passenger tell him he can only go if it’s in a car with the driver and one other passenger. That’s the rule.
And then let others make their own rules.
you need to make the best decision for your family. and let others to the same.

There was a team scavenger hunt, which I knew nothing about and would not have allowed.
I think it should be an assumed rule -- that parent's would not allow their child in the car of a teen driver.
Parents get to make an exception, for situations they know, teen drivers they know. The coach should not be suggesting this/expecting this.

When DC was asked/pressured to drive a carload of teammates around, we talked about it. DC didn’t like it and didn’t feel able to say no. We said you can drive one teammate at a time, absent an emergency or working things out with us ahead of time, and that’s a family rule for using our car. That seemed to resolve it.

There are school rules for being off campus before games. This is afterschool but before the games start.
Coach seems to be encouraging the driving members of the team to drive the non-driving team mates to an offsite location and return for games.
Is this something that’s done at your school/by your coach?
I have reservations about the safety of car loads of teens but other parents do not seem to feel the same way.
