Question: The cars seems to drive fine. What happens when the transmission actually fails? Is it dangerous to drive it locally until it just dies? Just curious.

Is a transmission a normal thing that goes at 130,000 miles?

Yes, it’s normal for a CVT to fail *before* 130k miles.

The days of being able to put 250k miles on a car are over. If it has a CVT it will typically start to begin failing just after 100k miles.

Blame the govt. They’re the reason CVT’s became so widely used. CAFE standards. They get maybe 10% better mileage than a traditional automatic transmission. Over a fleet of millions of vehicles, that’s an enormous amount of fuel saving and subsequent pollution reduction. But the penalty for it is now cars don’t last nearly as long as they did 20 years ago.

We have a 15 yard dumpster behind our shop that is now half-full of Nissan and Subaru CVT’s. All of them came out of cars that were otherwise still in pretty good shape. Most went on to the shredder because the transmission costs more than the car is worth.

It’s really sad we’ve been forced into this by the federal govt. We’re now throwing away cars at 100k miles when similar cars used to go 200k miles. It’s such a waste.

Actually, aren't you more likely now than ever before to be able to get a car to 250K + miles? Maybe just not in a vehicle with a CVT!

Somewhat related question, since it sounds like you may be a mechanic? Do you think a stop-start system is detrimental to an engine? It seems like it may be overly taxing to the engine while only being marginally helpful for emissions and fuel economy. Not to mention requiring a separate battery in some vehicles.

$9,500 according to the stealership...I would check with an independent mechanic that knows something about Nissans if you're actually interested in keeping it.

Whether it's dangerous depends on your ability to accept risk and how you would feel about being stranded if the vehicle became inoperable. It seems kind of odd that you're not experiencing any signs of a bad transmission?

I recently had a car with nearly 300K miles on it. It needed work, but I did not have the work done. It felt like it could be a disaster waiting to happen, but fortunately it did not happen. I have also been stranded by a much newer car with fewer miles twice, with no advance warning. You can never be certain.

OP here. Yes it is a CVT. I just spoke to the dealer.

I'd be interested in hearing whether it does have the CVT, when you find out.

Strange. A transmission problem that requires a whole replacement should be obvious to you. It should shake, shudder and make a lot of noise. I would take it to a non-dealer mechanic.

Definitely take it for second opinion at a non-dealer mechanic.

You might need a new transmission or you might need a new sensor. With an older car a lot can go wrong. Too many possibilities to say what is exactly wrong with your car but a second opinion seems reasonable.

OP here. Thanks for the comments.

The car is a QX-60. Not sure if that is the variable transmission.

It is drivable, so I might take it for a second opinion. But I am not going to put thousands of dollars in it.

The dealer told me they would give me $300 for the car (it is a bit rough on the exterior also). I might also take it to Carmax to see what they will give me for it.

Oh well. Things could be worse. At least I won’t have to pay insurance on it once I get rid of it.

Also, yes, you could get a 2nd opinion. You're not noticing it slipping at all when driving it?

As far as whether they should have noticed it as an issue a month ago, my guess is that this isn't necessarily true

This is a bummer. Does it have their continuously variable transmission (CVT)? I was reading about that when researching QX60s, and it sounded like some were finding it problematic.

Don’t do it! Infinitis last about 10 years then fall apart. It will never be the same after replacing the transmission and you’ll continue throwing good money after bad.

The check engine light was on. The dealer did a diagnostic and said the car needs a new transmission.

I am frustrated. Not just that cost, but the fact that I had the dealer look over the car a month ago and this was not an issue. I spent significant money on other repairs now this would be $4000 more. I think we will just get rid of the car (it was our extra car when the kids are home).

Can they be sure it actually needs a new transmission? Should they have noticed that earlier?

I realize I am just out of luck and am venting.
