I think this was more common when there were conferences were the private HS counselors and college counselors would gather. Then, people realized that was crazy. but some relationships remain. Also, there's a fair amount of movement btw some high school admissions teams and college counseling teams and the college side, especially with boarding schools.

These conferences still happened. DC's public school counselor attended one last year at Vanderbilt and was one of I believe 3 public schools represented. It's a common occurrence.
