So you are looking for a fully remote position? As opposed to the opportunity to telework a few times per week?

If that is the case there are currently 84 competitive service competition positions available and 23 excepted service competition positions available. The vast majority are for internal hiring or displaced employees with preference.

I've done it. Went from GS-14 excepted service to GS-15 civilian at another agency. But, it was entirely through networking. I took a rotation there, they valued me more and said they'd give me a billet and promote me. Developed a position description just for me and posted it on USAjobs. They ended up finding a loophole where they could direct hire me, so they cancelled the USAjobs. I've been there since 2020.

OP here, I’m tired of the restrictions of my job field and would like the potential to telework even for a single day.

It is exactly as possible to get into the competitive service from the excepted service as it is for anyone from the outside.

You aren't at a disadvantage being excepted, but you aren't advantaged either.

But why is it so important for you to get into the competitive service? Once you are in and passed a trial period there is literally no difference.

I’m trying to get out of the excepted service but want to stay a fed. Hardly anything is available and my only option is to apply with the general public and I’m sure my resume will never get through even though I have a lot of strong qualifications.

Is there any hope? Do I need to do more networking or would that even make a difference?
