You will also encounter premium costs incountry as the school summer break typically is about mid-December to end-January. To get the most reasonable fares, you need to have booked near the beginning of the year but even so, the flights would have been expensive. For flights less than 25 hours, it will be more than $3,000 per person.

Also, in terms of the amount of time, remember it will be about 30 hours door to door each way and you also lose a day on the way over (ie if you leave on 15th, you arrive on 17th).

Just asking as someone who has been there many, many times. It's a very long way to go to end up in a country that is very similar to the one you started in. Lots of places in the world that are far and you feel it when you land. But perhaps that's part of the appeal?

Anyway, yes, in 4.5 years you will need at least $35k+

The short answer is - I haven't been everywhere but it’s on my list.

Australia is expensive and so is the flights. OP wants to go during the most expensive time of the year around the holidays. 50k sounds right.

We did this as a family of 6 last December. It was closer to $30K but I did use points for airfare.

It doesn’t seem worth 50k. OP: I recommend pretending you are going this year and price it all out and see how much it would cost. And then add some for inflation. I would think twice on spending that much.

5 people is suites or 2 rooms. Internal airfares are not cheap. At least $50k

Wow! We did 2 weeks in NZ and AUS and spent around 5K BUT we used points for airfare.

It's not cheap flying 5 people round trip to AUS.

Airfare alone will be more than $15K likely.

What would be a realistic budget for a family 5 to go to Australia - probably for 2 weeks over winter break in December - presumably to see the greatest hits but we are ok with Airbnb fwiw.

Kids would be 18, 16, and 13 at the time of trip. And this would be in 4.5 years! But I need to start saving sooner than later.

Is $30K too low ball of an estimate? That was my best guess. But I have no experience and I am essentially basing that estimate on vibes only
