+1 the book is not great, her writing is not good.

I can't get past her writing. Is the movie script decent?

I saw it but didn’t really look into what it was about. It was quite a bit “darker” in some ways than I anticipated, but I really liked it. It will resonate with a lot of women, I think. I agree with the comments that DV can be complex and confusing, and the movie certainly speaks to that.

Blake Lively is a good actress. No doubt about that.

I will definitely be seeing the movie. My kind of thing - good looking cast etc. and I like Blake even though she is driving me crazy with her overexposure this summer with Deadpool and a hair line and a two drink lines and this movie and so on.

The bar is much higher for me to read a book than see a movie. I am an avid reader and don’t like to waste time. I got turned off by the fact that the book characters are much younger than the movie cast because apparently one of the leading men is a neurosurgeon and in the book he is like 27 which is obviously not possible given to be a neurosurgeon you have to have one millions years of school and training. It pissed me off that an author and editors could be that lazy or shallow that they let they slide. Try harder.

I’m also turned off by the cast drama. Justin seems like a good guy who worked hard. Colleen Hoover asked him to direct and star and he didn’t want to do both but she pushed him. Then when Blake and Ryan got involved Colleen totally took their side and let them take over. The cast and she seem like mean girls and super immature. He seems to be taking the high road in every interview I’ve seen.

But yea, we have a beach vacation coming up next week and I’ll go one afternoon with my teen daughter to watch it. My other daughter and husband are not interested at all. Will be interesting to see how this does.

Definitely don’t see it as glorifying violence. It shows nuances that can occur in relationships with DV. Like the previous pp stated it’s not always black and white.

There’s confusion, and there’s family entanglement, there’s a shared history. DV is always wrong AND it can be complex.

Teens can read this book
Ugh you really are stupid .

I’m the quoted PP. What is stupid? IMO, the book romanticized domestic violence and made it seem like he lashed out because he loved her so much. It’s not something I’d want to promote for my daughters. Yes they have the cognitive ability to read the book but it doesn’t match my values.

I thought it showed that he thought it’s a sign of love but everyone looking on sees it’s not and from the inside looking out, it looks very different than the outside looking in.

I thought it was quite good in depicting the fact that DV is not black and white in the moment but cumulatively it’s so obvious.

Its was also good in showing how victims don’t always have a clear recounting of what actually happened.

It’s a rare depiction.

I feel Big Little lies also did a good job.

DP but this is a rude comment. Also your punctuation is messed up and you don’t have a point. Are you a teen?

Weird press surrounding it. As PP mentioned, one lead/director (Justin Baldoni) is speaking on the movie as an important discussion of DV. Making me think it’s a heavy - but important - movie, like Precious.

Blake Lively, in contrast, is speaking on it as a rom com - good movie for a group of girls to watch together.

Which is it?

The hype is mostly cast gossip. Not the quality of the film itself. The director is also one of the leads and everyone (the cast) has unfollowed him. He is doing press mostly alone and is the only one talking about DV. Blake and others seem to be promoting it like a rom com. Fwiw.

Anyone see this movie? Is it any good? I haven’t read the book and don’t really know anything about it but there’s a ton of hype (although on DCUM there is more focus on Blake Lively’s mole than her acting).

Also - is the book a worthwhile read for a middle-aged adult?

Thanks.
