Yup. Just safer that way.

Why would it be transparent if it's a nickname friends and family call me? Am I absolutely obligated to give a name I dislike that is my legal name?

Yep, I gave my “Starbucks name”, Maria; my real name is something like Marillen.

OP here. Guy gave a completely fake name on app. Once he had my number he told me his real name. He is for sure not married.

All of the guys I've gone out who've lied other profiles, turned out to be deceitful. Usually they lie about age. This is first lie about name I've encountered.

Well it's sad but yes many guys on old are still married in general.

Idk if it's a deal breaker but as a woman I never give my legal name on apps. I doubt most people with more ethnic names do anyway. I used to use a slightly different name, think Lea instead of Leyla. Once we started chatting, I would sign my actual first name.

Plenty of women use fake names on the apps.

There absolutely no need or reason to expect a real name before you start 1:1 chatting. As long they tell you it's an alias before you start chatting, and the real name comes up before the first in person meetup, so you can do your background research, it's fine.

I agree with more context. For example, going by TJ instead of Thomas Jeffery is no big deal. Going by TJ when his real name is Stewart Little is very weird.

But I get not wanting to be "too visible" or googleable when talking to/meeting randos.

What are the circumstances? Like they have a fake name on the profile and when you start chatting they let you know their real name and how they use a fake one for privacy? Or like you have been dating for several months and you find out his name isn't his name? Something in between?

I think context is everything here.

Should giving a fake name on an app be a dealbreaker? Or do you think it’s reasonable for a man to want privacy?
