Incorrect. Not only for the technical reasons people have explained (yes there is a merge pattern and no you should not be crossing solid lines to merge before the cars ahead of you on the on-ramp) but also generally highways would be safer if peopel drove defensively instead of offensively. "Good judgment and situational awareness" means understanding that you will have plenty of time to merge if you wait your turn and also that waiting will result in less congestion because it won't box out cars in the ramp lane who then have to fight to merge before the lane ends or segues into an off-ramp.

This is of a piece with passing on the left and tailgating and failure to signal before changing lanes and other dangerous highway behaviors. There are rules for highway driving and it's important to follow them because the high rates of speed makes crashes much deadlier. Following these rules does not make you a "timid mouse." It means you are a team player who views the road as a shared resource and not your personal highway to your destination.

Wrong, dimwit. There can be other cars in front of you on the merge during higher traffic hours, you simply cannot go faster to merge. If you're someone courteous, you let them merge first before getting on. A holes who are impatient cross the gore, speed up, and then mess up everything when people try to merge, csuong more congestion and accident risk.

You sound like a bad driver. The PP is saying the car merging behind them crosses early and speeds up into the space they were merging into. They could keep merging and smash into the jackass but that would really slow things down.

There are so many things wrong that drivers do! It’s almost like they should re-take their driver’s test every 10 years or so. You are correct. They should not be crossing a solid like. They should merge after the solid line and they are failing to do so.

I don't know why they do it, but I agree with you that it happens often (and not just to me, I see it happening ahead of me as well). I've lived up and down the east coast (including NJ and MA, which aren't known for their good drivers) but the merge cutoff seems to happen more here. I guess people here are just that much more important and need to get there first.

Is there anything more rage inducing when you’re getting onto the highway and the ahole behind you is so impatient they attempt to get onto the highway before you have a chance? They always do it by driving over solid lines. What a great way to cause more congestion and accidents. I truly will never understand why so many aholes do this around here.
