I though MN is well run politically

I brought MN up to my DS and he quickly said no. He wants South or West. We have even been to MN a bunch of times. So, was kind of surprised by his quick response. It is the same as the other large state schools and is hard to get into for STEM or business.

I don't get the love for Pitt. My only thought is the cost and the distance to DC is ideal.

Because everyone is leaving Minnesota. Tim Walz destroyed the state.

MN resident here. There is not a lot of hype surrounding the U, as it lacks the college town vibe of other nearby public universities, especially Madison, and it is often only 20-30 minutes from the suburbs where many MN kids grow up. Crime has been an increasing issue in the campus over the last few years, making it difficult to truly enjoy the neighborhood that it is in.

U of Minn is truly a safety school. They don't even require essays! Just send in the transcript and you are admitted!

Weather is extreme and most of the kids that go there actually commute. You aren’t going to find the college town feel that you would at say Penn State. It’s a totally diff vibe.

Given how much kids from around here want to go to college in urban areas, I'm surprised UMN is overlooked so much. The Twin Cities are awesome!

But your point re: the weather is well taken.

DS FCPS class of 23 was accepted and offered amazing merit from UMN. Ended up at UMD.

I’m a UMN grad. Moved around and now back in Minneapolis. I think it’s just not seen as a very hip place, but there’s a lot to like here. The best thing is how close campus is to so many internship opportunities. You can take public transit easily. I worked for an ad agency all through undergrad and just took a short bus ride downtown.

Question: tons of kids from around here apply to Pitt...and I feel like Indiana U and OSU are also getting a lot of attention. My sense is that these schools are attracting a lot of applications since Wisconsin has gotten much more selective. My question is why has University of Minnesota not gotten a lot of love from around here? I mean, weather is an obvious factor but it's not much worse than Wisconsin, right?
