My college had water fountains. I ended up on a college campus on a very hot evening recently, waiting for my kid who was taking a class there (note: little kid, don't have a fit about me helicoptering) so I went for a walk and then go thirsty. There were no water fountains, only filling stations. There was a vending machine, but it only had things like Monster and Mountain Dew. It was ridiculous. Plus the vending machine didn't take cards, and the bill thing was broken and I don't carry change in my pocket like I did in college.

So, the strategies I would have used as a college student weren't the solution here.

Just buy water in the cafeteria. This isn't that hard.

Same! It was the 90s and everyone got these $5 giant mugs from dining services- that was the new thing- refills. We filled them with hot chocolate, destroyed them and there were always 5 of them in the bathroom sinks soaking. It was disgusting. The rich kids just bought new ones.

If kid don’t wash water bottle, they likely won’t regularly fill a water bottle either. Or woulf not throw away empty plastic bottles and would let them pile up. Or would not likely change a water filter.

I’d let it go. your kid survived. They don’t need to drink water constantly. And there are likely water fountains or meals or outings where they can get water when they need it.

Reuses one for a week or so, and then either loses it, or runs it through the dishwasher, or recycles it. To be honest, he probably loses it the most of those three options.

His brother has the expensive water bottle that always stays cold, but I can't keep replacing those.

There are no self-cleaning water containers. If they won’t rinse out a bottle, they won’t change a Britta filter, either. Buy a flat of plastic water bottles and a recycling bin or just let them manage their water intake on their own.

Umm this is a grown ass adult, why are you trying to micromanage unless they asked for suggestions. Do you also suggest what type of tampons and toilet paper.

Using a dirty water bottle? If it gets gross, it either won't matter or they'll get sick and learn something.

This is not something you need to fix for your college student.

I will start this post by admitting fault in not raising a child who has enough motivation to hand wash their own dishes... DC finished their first year of college last year and never really drank water bc too lazy to wash out bottle when it got gross. One time even said they got sick to their stomach after drinking from it (husband says beer is the more likely culprit). I suggested disposable cups, sorry Mother Earth, but DC wasn't interested. Any alternatives to a water bottle that won't get washed? Glad this forum is anonymous, what a ridiculous question to even post!
