Sicily. So much history, geographical beauty, and culture, with great food. It's everything you love about mainland Italy without the crowds.

Little towns north of Barcelona - I'd never have gone except for a soccer tournament but maybe my favorite place in Spain now. Croatia, of course - Krk Island is lovely. Bukhara, Uzbekistan - so much history. And Virunga, DRC. We organized our trip with https://www.inspired-journeys.com/virunga - and it was completely unforgettable. You go in tiny little groups of 4 or 5 people to see the Mountain Gorillas. Every morning, they send out scouts to find out where they have moved over night and your trek can be an hour or 5 hours to find them. Amazing trip. Bring good shoes.

Madrid - I'm surprised other people hated it. Great food, great people, great city.

London, I really enjoyed the vibe of that city. This was before Elizabeth passed and right around Covid. I went back. I love that little chain bar/restaurant the Alchemist! The restaurants were great!

A few places I knew I'd like but didn't expect to want to return again and again:

Bermuda - stunningly gorgeous

Liguria, Italy - totally charming and not overrun with tourists when we went

Iceland - unique geology, gorgeous vistas around every corner. Wasn't terribly popular or crowded when we went.

Palm Springs - I really love the desert

Adirondacks - Big, deep, clear lakes surrounded by impressive mountains. As an ocean-lover I never gave lakes enough credit.

Monument Valley. I had a tour, on my own, at dawn. It was amazing.

Syria. I went before the civil war. So much history, great food, welcoming people. I’m heartbroken about what’s happened to that country.

Page, AZ. So tiny. The town itself is nothing to look at. But the natural wonders around it--oh mine I wish we had more time there. Also had a fantastic dinner at one of the best gluten free restaurants: Bonkers.

Where did you go that you enjoyed, especially if you weren't expecting to?

I was pleasantly surprised by Maastricht, Netherlands (Netherlands in general).
