I find during the school year recess plus one rec sport a season isn't enough exercise since they only have one practice and then only play half a game for equal playing time.
We ended up adding a second rec sport most seasons when we realized that most of the neighborhood kids are too busy with travel sports so that pick up games or other outside play aren't a natural go to after school.
When we don't have sports, we try to emphasize the importance (healthy habits) of going outside to get some sort of movement, even when neighborhood friends aren't home.

Honestly no sport will do this…take a look at his diet but he is also at an age where a lot of boys get chubby (before they shoot up in height).

If he is a big kid in general look into baseball. They love the bigger kids at this age.

I mean, do a sport your kid enjoys? He's old enough. Don't rely on a sport for weightloss (as disused above that's useless) and definitely don't force your kid into a sport he hates for weightloss purposes. If you want him to be active, let him be active in a way he enjoys. You want him to LIKE being active, not resent it.

I’d look into sports conditioning classes or kids’ run clubs in your area. I think starting with one of these would be good in building endurance and confidence. Going straight to a high cardio team sport like basketball or soccer might not be great for his confidence if he isn’t used to running a lot already.

You could also look at wrestling where he’d be matched with kids his weight class. It’s also a good workout.

Shot put? Seriously not trying to be funny or mocking. The shot puters in the Olympics are big boys, not just strong, something about being big gives them an advantage I think but I am not sure.

The Judo guys are big as well.

Their kid may be a girl.

Uh, no. Title says boy.

OP, you don’t just “spot remove” fat. Fat gets reduced as part of overall weight loss and fitness. No exercise will ever compensate for a poor diet. Running for 30 min straight might burn 400 calories. That could be one unhealthy snack. Talk to a dietician or get more nutrition-savvy.

Aerobic conditioning is helpful. Running — track, xcountry — is the best for this. Lacrosse is great because it requires so much running.

Soccer theoretically should require a lot of running, but a lot of coaches and programs reduce field size and don’t run kids.

Basketball, too, often practices on a 1/2 court.

Also OP calls him a "boy" in the title.

OP says "his belly". But throwing sports (shot put, hammer throw, discus) are definitely one place where kids who are bigger shine.

Have you talked to their pediatrician? Are they concerned?

Do not do baseball/softball... hardly any conditioning. I would sign them up for a kids fitness class.
