At least that is how it tended to be the last 3 years. Also, they will matriculate Green and Gold into Pre-ECNL level teams, which requires stronger competition and will likely be offered extra training & better coaching.

Why would they have 2 teams in the top bracket and 2 teams in the bottom bracket, but zero terms in the middle two brackets?

Because at that age it’s not really brackets. They don’t truly bracket teams until U11. Think of it as groupings. It all works out because they are just 9.

Are the silver and gold teams equivalent to rec or better than that?

McLean goes: green, white, gold, silver

The difference between the green and white seems like it will be huge compared to the gold and silver if green and white were both placed in the top bracket and gold and silver were both placed in the bottom bracket of 4 brackets. Curious that they didn't spread their 4 teams across all 4 divisions unless gold and silver are really terrible in comparison. Is that 4th bracket at ncsl really bad? Or will it still have good soccer?

It will still be a mixed bag at U10 in NCSL... they don't truly Promote and Relegate teams in NCSL until Spring of U11. You will have some strong teams and weak teams... since they don't track the scores at that age, it will be hard to determine who is excellent.... but rest assured you can expect some games to be complete 10-0 blowouts.

I just looked at the division breakdown. I noticed arlington has two of their teams in the first bracket and three of their teams in the second bracket. That seems odd.

Well, I have noticed the placement rules are not exactly cut and dry. While the Tech Director plays a roll in requesting what teams are placed in what division, NCSL also massages placement with their requirements. Nothing at the U10 level is taken too seriously, they do not have very accurate team levels, so they do the best they can in placement while not devoting too much time to it. Better placement start to form at U11 and scores are transparent at U11 in the spring.

The bottom bracket does have teams with poor records; however, the bottom bracket is also for newly formed teams or teams that have a roster change of more than 50%

In our experience with the younger boys side, there seems to be a big gap between green/white and gold/silver.
