You clearly get employer paid family health insurance! We pay for our dependents. But if we are only getting one I think I’d prefer for her to be on ours as I imagine she’ll do most appointments when she is home from school.

This is a bit naive. A child can be covered at a dependent on their health insurance, but plenty of people pay a hefty price for it. And by taking them off your plan and putting them on the plan offered via the college, it may be huge savings .

NP. Depends on the school. DS's was July 8 to keep it off the fall bill, but we could have until September sometime to get it waived. The bill is due before then, though, so we'd have to wait for it to be adjusted and refunded.

OP, I did a text chat with our insurance provider to clarify what would be covered OOS, and then I used the online "find a doctor" system to find doctors that were in network. He's near both a small hospital and a major medical center, and it all looked fine.

Our health insurance works in our son's college state, so he waives it every year.

Even if you have to pay extra fees for out of network , it’s prob worth it to take that gamble. For my kid school insurance was $1200 a year. So as long as any fees are less than $4800 over the 4 years we win. Chances are kid doesn’t need any medical care at all.

Didn’t matter fur us in the end. Although my kid missed the deadline to waive it two of the 4 years, the school reimbursed us with proof of coverage.

We have a CareFirst federal employee plan. In many areas they can provide what they call Away from Home coverage, where your student would receive in network coverage in the state where they attend school. We have to renew every year, then DC gets a Blue Cross of MA ID card (we live in VA, school is in Boston).

Call your provider to make sure your kid is covered OOS. Probably is but check just to be sure. I waive it every year.

you need to look at the provider network of your insurance plan. Most are national and have no issue going in network. Most also have a provision for out of network. Few have a limited regional territory of providers, so you need to check. The college plan is expensive especially if you are already covering your minor so most parents waive the coverage.
