Your info on LMU seems pretty outdated. Average GPA for last year‘s entering class was a 4.0. Acceptance rate is 40%.

We live in LA and have high schoolers. No one goes to Chapman unless they are desperate and have not got in anywhere else.

LMU looks amazing on the surface, the campus is beautiful and the students are friendly. There are more female than male students. There is a big emphasis on their film studies and local internships in the "industry". Their average SAT is somewhere in the 1200s and they mostly take B students.

The Jesuit thing is very minor. You are required to take ONE class in religion, it can be any religion, Judaism, Islam, you name it and the requirement is done.

There's no open prayer meetings out on campus like at Pepperdine which is hard core Evangelical.

I toured both with my DD. She did not like either very much. On the tours they both talked a lot about the film school. We had the impression that that is their strongest school for both. LMU is in a nice area near the beach/LAX. We did not get the sense that they are very strong in STEM. They seemed better suited for film, comms, business (softer areas like marketing etc). The students seemed nice, outgoing, privileged, and not very woke. As for Chapman, nothing really stood out - perhaps the film school is strong? The campus is in a boring OC suburb but the small town of Orange is a few blocks from campus and is super cute. They have antique malls, vintage stores etc. We loved the town of Orange (but not so much the school itself)! This campus did not seem very woke either.

Chapman is a rich kid school for Evangelicals and other Protestants who didn’t get into USC or a UC.

LMU while Jesuit has a lot of non-Catholics. More diverse student body. Great location near the coast.

Basically, Chapman is very white & Asian (aka the OC) whereas LMU is much more diverse (aka LA proper). Depends on what kind of experience your kid wants. Chapman will be more of a bubble; LMU will have your kid going out a lot in LA. About half of students live on campus at both schools.

Bosch’s daughter went to Chapman. First I had heard of the school.

Really? It's that much worse?

Personally liked that Lmu is more westside la & close to South Bay beaches vs Chapman which felt like inner Orange County. Lmu feels like a larger school vs Chapman, small school feel. Lmu stronger for science & engineering. Sports aren’t big at Lmu, but still D1 basketball. Historically I think Lmu gets good hs students who just didn’t get into Ucla or Usc. While Chapman is a whole level below, more like uc riverside or cal state level kids who have $ for small private.

What did you think when you visited?

I prefer LMU, but it’s very subjective. You’d have to visit to see which is a better fit for your kid.

LMU is a solid school. Good placement in business. Has a strong cinema program. I don’t know anything about Chapman.

Both in SoCal, similar size, similar endowment. I know LMU is ranked higher and is harder to get into, but I'm really interested in the vibe, culture, student body, academics, etc. TIA!
